Compress a video to the size you need

Pick the maximum size and the video is re-encoded in your browser to fit. Nothing is uploaded.

Maximum size

You get an MP4 (H.264) that plays everywhere. Sound is copied untouched; location and other data are removed.

Files never leave your device

How to do it

  1. Choose an MP4 or MOV video.
  2. Pick the maximum size: 10, 16, 25 or 50 MB, or your own.
  3. Press "Compress video" and keep the tab open: the bar shows the progress.
  4. Watch the preview and download the MP4.

Questions

Is my video uploaded to a server?

No. Your browser decodes it and compresses it again on your own device. Nothing is sent anywhere.

Why is it a little smaller than the size I picked?

The quality is worked out to land just under the limit and the result is checked; if it is over, it is done again at a lower quality. 1 MB counts as 1,000,000 bytes, so it passes however a site counts.

Which videos work?

MP4 and MOV with H.264 video, which is the usual case. HEVC videos (iPhone "High Efficiency") only open in browsers that can read them, such as Safari; otherwise you will be told. MKV and fragmented MP4 (some OBS recordings) are not supported yet. The result is always an H.264 MP4, which plays everywhere.

Which browsers does it work in?

Current Chrome, Edge and Opera, and Safari 16.4 or later: they have WebCodecs, the part of the browser that compresses video. Other browsers show a notice.

How long does it take?

It depends on the device and the length. On a current computer a minute of video usually takes under a minute; on an older phone, a good deal longer.

Are location and other data removed?

Yes. The new video carries no location, date or phone model. It plays in the same orientation as the original.
